What do Kartemquin Films, Kindling Group, Siskel/Jacobs Productions, Media Process Group, and Free Spirit Media all have in common? In an unprecedented move, all of these Chicago documentary powerhouses teamed up to create The School Project and the tvlab couldn’t be more pleased to work with them.
In 2013, Chicago Public Schools announced that an unprecedented 49 neighborhood schools would be permanently closed. The School Project team began following affected families and educators, policymakers, and advocates as the closures unfolded — and their stories became a jumping-off point for exploring many urgent questions facing public education today. The School Project uses an interactive map, documentary video, news coverage, and conversation to deepen our understanding of how these issues are unfolding across Chicago. The project includes six 10-minute documentaries and a series of shorter webisodes on a variety of public education topics.
The tvlab helped craft a strategy that would help these veteran feature-length documentary filmmakers evolve their content and strategies to succeed in the world of YouTube and social media distribution. The lab helped to enhance the visibility of video content hosted on YouTube with a focus on SEO/search. We also developed a series of suggestions for developing new content specifically for enhancing sharability and audience engagement.
